Each workbook contains at least one worksheet. To manage the worksheets in a workbook, click to display the Worksheets panel. You can perform the following tasks related to worksheets in this panel:

  • Adding
  • Renaming
  • Hiding or unhiding
  • Deleting
  • Moving up or down the list

Understanding active and hidden worksheets

A worksheet that can be viewed in your workbook is an active worksheet. You can hide a worksheet so that it cannot be accidentally modified. Tables are listed in the same way whether they belong in an active or hidden worksheet.

The only task that you can perform on a hidden worksheet is unhiding it. Unhiding a worksheet means changing a worksheet back into an active worksheet.

Adding a worksheet

Follow these steps to add a worksheet:

  1. Click . By default, the Tables panel is displayed.
  2. Click the worksheet icon to display the Worksheets panel as shown in the following screenshot:

  3. Click the icon in the upper left corner of the panel to add a worksheet as shown in the following screenshot:

The new worksheet is automatically made the active worksheet. You can rename the worksheet later.

Renaming a worksheet

When you create a worksheet, you can either provide a worksheet name or accept the one suggested by Xcalar Design. The worksheet can be renamed at any time.

Worksheet names are case-sensitive. There are no restrictions on the characters, but Xcalar Design removes the space if you type it as the first character.

Follow these steps to rename a worksheet:

  1. In the Worksheet panel, right click the name of a worksheet.
  2. In the drop-down menu, click Rename.
  3. Type the new name in the name field, then press Enter.

Hiding or unhiding a worksheet

You can hide a worksheet if it is not the only active worksheet. Follow these steps to hide a worksheet:

  1. In the Worksheet panel, right click the name of a worksheet in the Active Worksheet List.
  2. In the drop-down menu, click Hide worksheet.

Follow these steps to unhide a worksheet:

  1. In the Worksheet panel, right click for a worksheet in the Hidden Worksheet List.
  2. In the drop-down menu, click Unhide worksheet. The worksheet becomes active and is automatically displayed in the Xcalar Design window.

Deleting a worksheet

You can delete a worksheet if it is not the only active worksheet. Follow these steps to delete a worksheet:

  1. In the Worksheet panel, right click the name of a worksheet in the Active Worksheet List.
  2. In the drop-down menu, click Delete worksheet. If the worksheet does not contain any active tables, it is deleted immediately. Otherwise, a DELETE WORKSHEET modal window asks whether you want to cancel the deletion or continue the deletion after dropping or hiding the tables. The following screenshot shows the modal window:

For information about table statuses, see Understanding and changing table statuses.

Effects of worksheet deletion on tables

The following list describes how tables are affected by a worksheet deletion:

  • Hidden tables from a deleted worksheet are not associated with any worksheet. If you want to put a hidden table back in a worksheet, you can change its status to Active. Xcalar Design displays a modal window for assigning the table to a worksheet.
  • If you choose to hide tables when deleting a worksheet, the worksheet deletion can be undone through the Undo button. After the deletion is undone, the hidden tables become active again.

IMPORTANT: You cannot undo the action of dropping tables. Therefore, if you choose to drop tables during the worksheet deletion, you cannot undo the worksheet deletion through the Undo button.

Moving a worksheet up or down

Follow these steps to move a worksheet up or down the list:

  1. In the Worksheet panel, right click the name of a worksheet in the Active Worksheet List.
  2. In the drop-down menu, click Move up or Move down. The worksheet name is moved up or down the list.
